The Metriguard 7200 HCLT:
Bringing MSR Lumber Profits into the New Millennium

Asked what the biggest benefit sawmill owners will realize with the HCLT, Metriguard president James D. Logan says simply, "Profit. The MSR process has been around for 35 years, and the 7200 HCLT is the state-of-the-art way to realize the value-added benefits of a growing MSR marketplace because it produces the best grade yields." More than 1.1 billion board feet of MSR lumber was produced last year using Metriguard equipment.
Machine stress rating is the best way to realize profits from all classes of structural dimension lumber, and the 7200 HCLT is the best machine for the job. The 7200 HCLT evaluates up to 2000 + ft. (600 m.) of lumber per minute right in the production line, and its innovative lumber tunnel design with more driven rollers means fewer plug-ups and less downtime in the mill. A full range of lumber sizes is accommodated, from 2x3 to 2x12, as well as metric sizes from 35 x 70 mm to 45 x 290 mm.
The 7200 HCLT is available with Metriguards latest PC Data System, an easy-to-use Windows-based digital processing and control unit which permits flexible grading, automatic production and calibration records, and enhanced spray marking. Calibrating, maintenance, and troubleshooting the 7200 HCLT is simpler, easier, faster and more accurate with the PC Data System. The System also offers an unlimited number of size/grade combinations in configuration setup files
Composed of an industrial personal computer, a signal conditioning unit, and a system interface unit housed in a protective NEMA 12 industrial enclosure, the system brings MSR lumber grading into the new millennium with a full range of marking capabilities and shift reports. A data-recording feature, which gathers production results and statistics, may be used for performance monitoring, yield records, diagnostics and research. Large-character displays on the computer monitor are easily read from a distance. This allows operators of the 7200 HCLT to perform operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting functions while watching the machine. The operation is user-friendly, requiring minimal computer expertise.
The 7200 HCLT has also been designed and simplified to run more efficiently and for ease of maintenance. "Weve eliminated about 98% of the lubrication points on the 7200 HCLT, added spring steel coupling devices to improve calibration stability, and limited the number of mechanical fasteners to just a few sizes, so maintaining it will be much easier," explains Logan. Sealed bearings and modular roller assemblies further reduce maintenance requirements on the 7200 HCLT, and the unit is built for safety. The entire package has a total installed length of only 15 ft. 3 in. for convenience of installation into sawmill production lines. By adding a closed-loop drive system option, the machine can be placed closer than ever before to the planer outfeed.
In the MSR business for over 25 years, Metriguards Logan emphasizes the importance of direct physical measurement of lumber structural properties the method used by the 7200 HCLT. This results in more accurate grading with higher yields and profits. "Application of bending stress weeds out the weaklings. For 1 ½ in. lumber, approximately 55% of the design bending stress is applied in the HCLT. This eliminates problem lumber at the source, which builds customer trust and sawmill profits."
